The Maple Leafs need many positional upgrades at this time. With the trade deadline being tomorrow at 3 PM, I don’t see them being able to make a major trade due to their insufficient assets. The Leafs however can make a smaller trade for their fourth line. And this is where Riley Sheahan and Alex Chiasson comes in.
The Leafs 4th line is very questionable, and can’t score. Par Lindholm has mostly been offensively and defensively invisible this year with 1 goal in 61 games. Gauthier is very good defensively, and brings that physical touch we need, but also can’t score. The Leafs need a 4th line center with talented wingers on his side.
Riley Sheahan (centre) is currently reported to not be available for trade, but I doubt the Panthers won’t at least negotiate with Dubas. Alex Chiasson (winger) is currently 28th on TSN’s Trade Bait list which means he’s available for trade. He makes league minimum (650k) in his last year (this year). Sheahan makes a cheap 2.1M. Sheahan has a 50% winning percentage in faceoffs. That’s 4 points behind John Tavares. He has 8 goals and 13 points in 60 games between two teams (PIT & FLA). So, he can relatively score and is good in the faceoff dot. Perfect. Chiasson has 17 goals and 27 points in 52 games. He is also semi-grinder which benefits the 4th line.
Add these 2 players to Tyler Ennis, and you have a pretty solid and cheap 4th line for the playoffs.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Leafs do before the trade deadline tomorrow.
