The Leafs enter the 2019-20 offseason with $8.8M in cap space. They need to resign Mitch Marner, Andreas Johnsson, and Kasperi Kapanen.
These are some trades that will free up cap space and give us a few assets as well.
Move 1
Arizona Coyotes Acquire: Patrick Marleau (no salary retained)
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: 4th round pick.
Marleau isn’t a piece of “good depth” other than in his leadership. A Marlie can easily replace him. Arizona gets a grizzled leader for their young core, and reach the cap floor somehow. Leafs free up $6.25M in cap space getting them to $15M in total cap space.
Move 2
Leafs move Nathan Horton to LTIR.
Leafs free up $5.3M in cap space and get to $20.3M in cap space.
Move 3
Philadelphia Flyers Acquire: Kasperi Kapanen or Andreas Johnsson + prospect/pick
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: Shayne Gostisbehere
Philly gets the scoring depth in Kapanen or Johnsson + valuable goodies in a prospect/pick.
Leafs get a very good defensemen who will play next to Rielly.
Leafs Cap Space: $15.8M
Move 4
Ottawa Senators Acquire: Nikita Zaitsev + Jeremy Bracco
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: Logan Brown
Ottawa improves their defence with Zaitsev, gets another very good prospect for their rebuild in Bracco.
Leafs get rid of the bad contract, and get a good prospect in Brown.
Leafs Cap Space: $20.3M
Move 5
Toronto Maple Leafs sign RFA forward Mitch Marner to 8 years with annual pay of $10.6M
Leafs Cap Space: $9.7M
Move 6
Toronto Maple Leafs sign Kasperi Kapanen or Andreas Johnsson to 3 years with annual pay of $3.3M
Leafs Cap Space: $6.4M
At the end of these moves, The Leafs lose 2 bad contracts in Zaitsev & Marleau. A good prospect in Bracco, and either Kapanen or Johnsson. Leafs gain a top 2 RD in Gostisbehere, a good prospect in Logan Brown, resigning of Marner and Kapanen or Johnsson, a 4th rounder and $6.4M in cap space.
These moves are pretty NHL 19ish if I’m being honest, but I think the off season will pan out with these types of contract dump moves and maybe a big trade to improve the defence.
